Africa is the world’s second-largest continent and an enormous and fascinating landmass. People, in general, don’t realise how huge the place is – or how varied for that matter. Africa offers one of the last places on Earth to enjoy genuine wildernesses and get right out into the middle of nowhere.

For that reason, it makes an excellent destination for road trips. You never quite know what you’re going to find in the course of your journey. The scenery and wildlife are simply spectacular.

So where should you consider going on your next road trip on the continent?

The Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are a chain of iconic peaks that run through Morocco’s interior. The range itself isn’t particularly high, but it, nonetheless, one of the most beautiful you will ever encounter.

Unlike many parts of Africa, the roads in Morocco are pretty good. They have to be for the tourist trade. That means that many routes through the mountains pass by historic sites and tourist traps. Thus, you can combine regular sightseeing with getting yourself acquainted with the lesser-known parts of the country.

The Highlands Of Ethiopia

The highlands of Ethiopia offer among the most attractive landscapes in Africa. It’s as if they were made for campervans. Expect to see jagged, brush-covered peaks and plenty of unusual rock formations, totally unspoiled by human activity.

If you want to go to this part of the road, avoid the months June to September – this is the rainy season. The best time of year to go is between March and May when temperatures are pleasant, and the weather is mainly dry.

Be prepared to block a considerable chunk of time out of your regular calendar to explore the region. Most people spend at least a month here, taking the place in.

Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the better-known countries south of the Sahara and a popular destination for people who want to experience what Africa is all about. 

The country is still primarily rural, but don’t expect mile after mile of farmland. Instead, the landscape is still largely pristine, despite the growing population.

The roads here are a little worse for wear (or non-existent), so you’ll need a proper 4×4 to get around and a winch if you decide to go in the rainy season. 

Once you get there, there are many sites to explore. The ruins of the Mtoni Palace are a popular stop-off. So too is the Olduvai Gorge. 

Madagascar

Madagascar is Africa’s most exciting country for wildlife. It’s home to some of the world’s rarest species and offers unbelievable remoteness. 

Most people going on a Madagascar road trip for the first time usually head to one of the country’s national parks. Popular options include the Ranomafana National Park or the Isalo National Park. Both of these provide opportunities to see stunning wildlife in relative safety. 

If you want to experience more of the history of the country, then you’ll want to head in the direction of Gara de Soarano or Fort Manda.

There are many, many more places to explore in Africa of course, but these are just a few of the less travelled and less known ones.
